Yash Raj Chopra was born in Lahore, Pakistan in a family of eight children, of whom he was the youngest. His father was an accountant and Yash was brought up in the home of his elder brother, Baldev Raj Chopra, who was a film journalist. Later, he went to Jalandhar in 1945, and pursued his studies at Doaba College in the city. After Partition, he moved to Ludhiana and studied engineering there. Soon, he realized that his interest lied in film making and this decision took him to Mumbai to start a career in films. Chopra married Pamela Chopra in 1970 and the couple had two sons. The elder one, Aditya is a successful film maker and is leading the Yash Raj banner by helm, while Uday, the younger one is a film actor and producer. The Hindi film industry suffered an irreparable loss when Chopra died of dengue fever in 2012.
