Kunal received acting training from Barry John, flowing which he joined a theater group run by actor Naseeruddin Shah, under the name of “Motley”. Then he stepped into Bollywood as an assistant director in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer film “Aks” in 2001. His film debut came in 2005 as the lead actor in the M F Hussain venture “Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities”, in which he was cast opposite actress Tabu. He received recognition with the 2006 movie called “Rang De Basanti”, which had Aamir Khan as the lead actor. The film received great laurels such as nomination for Best Foreign Film at BAFTA Awards 2007, along with a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor nomination for Kunal.
