Om Puri was born in Ambala in Haryana in a Punjabi Khatri family, with his father working in the Indian Railways and the Army. He was interested in film acting from the beginning only, which is the reason he joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune to pursue a course in acting. He later joined the National School of Drama in 1973, where he was in the same batch with Naseeruddin Shah.

Om Puri made his film debut with a Marathi film called “Ghansham Kotwal”, which was released in 1976, based on a play written by Vijay Tendulkar, with the same name. He has acted in a number of art films such as “Sadgati”, “Dharavi”, “Ardh Satya” and “Mirch Masala”. One of his best performances came in the 1980 film called “Aakrosh” which earned him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, while the 1982 film “Ardh Satya” fetched him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
