In the Indian market, you get three types of room heaters: convection, radiant, and oil heaters. Since oil heaters are quite expensive, that’s why people prefer to buy convection and radiant heaters. With convection or radiant heaters, you don’t need to wait too long to heat up a normal-sized room. But the only thing that we don’t like about such heaters is that as soon as you turn them off, the room temperature starts to decrease drastically. But without a doubt, convection and radiant heaters are much more affordable and convenient, that’s why they sell like crazy in the winter season.
Sometimes it happens when the room heater you have been using for quite some time now, but it has suddenly stopped working. And it is a common problem with many affordable range room heaters, but did you know, if you have the right tools or equipment, you can fix that room heater on your own? Well, that’s true, and today’s post is solely dedicated to the possible reasons and fixes when your room heater is not working.
Possible Reasons Why Room Heater Not Working
The following are the most common reasons why convection or radiant heaters stop working.
- Broken or Faulty Main Wire
- Fan Motor Isn’t Working
- Faulty Electrical Fuse
The mechanism or circuit of the room heater is pretty simple, so you won’t have any difficulty understanding how the room heaters actually work. And in the majority of cases, when the heater has stopped working, you can fix it at home pretty easily if you have the right tools or equipment. So let’s talk about the possible fixes now.
Possible Fixes When Room Heater Not Working
You don’t need to be an electrician to fix the room heater at home, the process is rather easy. So let’s talk about how you can do so.
1. Broken or Faulty Main Wire
Most of the time when the radiant or convection heaters stop working, the problem is actually with the main wire that you plug into the socket. To verify that, just open up the heater, and use a multimeter. Connect the multimeter to the main wire’s end which you plug in the socket, if there is no reading on the multimeter, that means there’s a fault in the circuit of the heater. Now, connect the multimeter to the terminal box where the main wire connects. If there is still no reading on the multimeter that simply means the wire is faulty or broken. In this case, you can cut the wire, and attach a different one, but make sure the other wire you are using is the same gauge as the original heater wire.
2. Fan Motor Isn’t Working
If it is the fan motor that’s not working, then you can’t do much about it because such fan motors aren’t easily fixed. In this case, you’d have to take the heater to a nearby electrical shop and have the motor replaced.
3. Faulty Electrical Fuse
Sometimes it happens when the fan of the room heater is not working, but the heating coil is continuously producing heat when the room heater is plugged in. And this excess heat can cause some components such as the fuse to fail or burn out. When you open up the room heater, you’ll easily be able to locate the terminal box, and there you will see a fuse. By connecting the multimeter at both ends of the fuse, you can verify whether it is faulty or not. If it is faulty then you can buy a new fuse, and replace it with the old one.
Other than these fixes, if there is any other problem that you know can’t be fixed at home, in that case, take the room heater to a nearby electrical repair shop.
